The famous dengaku dish is said to have been eaten by members of the Byakkotai and Toshizo Hijikata. This teahouse sits along the road to Higashiyama Onsen. It was founded around 360 years ago and is currently run by the 16th generation owner and his wife. Their specialty is dengaku, which includes four types of ingredients, including homemade rice cakes, fried tofu, and dried herring. They are grilled with a special miso paste. Dengaku originally began as a dish where samurai's food was skewered and grilled in rice paddies or fields. The painter Kiyoshi Yamashita was a frequent visitor and fell in love with the taste.- Tel
